We are proud to announce that we recently won the “Chris Reardon Memorial Award for Sustainable Building Design” at the BDAA (Building Designer’s Association of Australia) National Awards for our Off-grid, Biophilic,Strawbale, Passivhaus-Premium Home!
This is a real honour, as Chris Reardon was the principal author of the “Your Home” sustainable design guide and specialised in sustainability training and design/construction consultancy to industry. Envirotecture’s directors Dick and Andy have also been some of the authors to this guide’s updates over the years, and there’s a lot of respect for the advocacy and education work that Chris did.
We do hope he’s proud of this project by our Victorian team – director Talina has talked of “Your Home” being like a sustainable-design bible for her when she was studying Architecture over 20 years ago. It wasn’t part of the syllabus at the time, but this was what she was passionate about even back then – how to design appropriately for the site (bioclimatic design and solar-passive design principles) and design in harmony with nature.
Our winning Huff’n’Puff Haus is an example of how you can do just that, and more…
The BDAA Award Winners were announced on their website:
“Talina Edwards won the Chris Reardon Memorial Award for Sustainable Buildings for Huff’n’Puff Haus. Designed by Talina Edwards, Huff’n’Puff Haus is a remarkable example of regenerative design, exceeding the traditional notions of beauty by focusing on ethical responsibility and care for both people and the planet.
Located in Ruffy, Victoria, this home was designed to be efficient, self-sufficient, and low in carbon footprint, all while prioritising resilience and adaptability. The use of natural and non-toxic materials, combined with innovations like prefabricated strawbale wall panels, contribute to its sustainability and eco-friendliness.
Beyond its striking appearance, it’s a true zero-carbon, passivhaus plus standard, and accessible dwelling that embodies the essence of ethical and sustainable design.”

We congratulate all the winners of the BDAA 2023 Awards! (See them here)
We have heartfelt thanks to each and every individual who were involved with this project – these are incredibly collaborative endeavours!
Our Directors Dick and Andy were at the Awards Ceremony in Sydney in October 2023 to receive our trophy to add to our collection of accolades.
