A joyful transformation of an existing suburban home, bringing together natural building materials, colourful interiors and a deep commitment to caring for people and planet.
In leafy Willoughby, on Sydney's north shore, an existing masonry home has been given a new lease on life. Affectionately nicknamed 'Permi Palace', this renovation and extension reflects its owners' passion for permaculture, natural materials and creating a home that celebrates sustainable living without compromising on colour, comfort or character.
For these clients, the garden was just as important as the house. Guided by the permaculture ethics of Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share, the brief prioritised retaining as much outdoor space as possible for growing food, nurturing nature and enjoying the garden. Rather than simply building bigger, the design carefully balances the needs of the home with those of the surrounding landscape.
Located within a heritage conservation area, the project retains the original masonry house while introducing a new hempcrete addition to the rear, along with a small studio. The choice of hempcrete reflects a commitment to natural building materials, with its plant-based composition offering excellent thermal properties and the potential to reduce embodied carbon compared with more conventional construction.
Water conservation is another important part of the story. A 10,000-litre underground rainwater tank and a greywater recycling trial undertaken with Sydney Water support the clients' ambition to make more thoughtful use of precious resources, particularly in their productive garden.
Inside, the transformation is anything but ordinary. Bold colours and playful interiors bring a sense of joy and individuality to the home, demonstrating that environmentally responsible architecture doesn't need to be beige, bland or boring.
Permi Palace is a celebration of what can happen when homeowners' values are at the heart of the design process. By working with what's already there, building with materials that grow and making room for nature, this project offers a refreshing vision for suburban living—one where the home and garden can flourish together.
