This lovely home was designed with a modest footprint that was appropriate for off-grid living in this rural location

This delightful little project is located in central Victoria, and was built during those difficult Covid-lockdown years. We've always fondly referred to it as the "Faraway Tree House" as the grand dame of a eucalypt is at the top of the hill, overlooking the site like a graceful guardian.

The brief was for a one-bedroom off-grid home with a composting toilet, that was comfortable all year around and made the most of the views and connection to the land.

It is unique in its response to the site - with a split-level design working with the existing hillside, to ensure a composting toilet could be installed with sub-floor access. This also allowed for a "sunken" bath which is another unique feature!

The walls were framed on site and insulated with straw bales, coated with lime-render each side, by experienced builders who've been building with straw for decades.

The solar passive design ensures the living area and bedroom are north-facing to capture the winter sun's free heating, and the split-level allows for a bonus loft space upstairs to look out to distant views to the south.
