Beautiful, Sustainable Building Design

Swimming with the sharks and rays at Irukandji just got a lot bigger

Posted by admin on 17/05/2022 at 3:11 pm

Irukandji Shark & Ray Encounter at Anna Bay, Port Stephens NSW, just got a whole lot bigger with the opening of the tropical shark lagoon. While still a work in progress, the construction of the in-ground pool – which is over 30m long – is complete and open to the public.

The large timber framed enclosure will be constructed over it in stages, avoiding peak holiday times. The glu-lam portal frames are being erected as we go to press, and the cladding and opening roof will be installed in coming months. The massive timber elements are truly awesome, constructed by X-Lam and Hyne Timber.

Envirotecture is really enjoying being the lead design team on this long running project, as the Irukandji ethos aligns perfectly with our own: do good, do no harm, make better. We are also really happy to support the marine animal rescue and rehabilitation charity Sea Shelter which the management team there operate on the site on Nelson Bay Rd.
