Eye catching design, bright colours and clean interior finishes make these toilets a welcome addition to Fairfield public spaces.
Envirotecture created a standard design for new public toilet facilities to replace ageing existing facilities in public spaces throughout the Fairfield local government area of south-west Sydney. Reducing water and energy demands was key. The design provides for natural ventilation and daylighting and where site conditions allow, PV arrays are integrated into the conical roof. This roof design collects rainwater that supplies toilet cisterns, hand basins and cleaning equipment.
The brief called for a safe and secure facility that was durable and easily maintained. Design accordingly ensured good circulation and visibility. Galvanized steel, precast concrete, composite timbers and plastics lend a contemporary look-and-feel while also being low maintenance and hard-wearing.
The concrete is made from 95% recycled materials, produced at Fairfield Council’s Sustainable Materials Resource Centre in Wetherill Park in conjunction with MetroMix. Only the Portland cement is virgin material—even the water used during production is harvested or recycled. Fairfield Council subsequently investigated replacing the Portland cement with geopolymers, which aimed to reduce the embodied energy and CO2 output to about 5% of conventional concrete.
