Sustainability services

Our in-house experts are among the most experienced Passivhaus designers in Australia with more than 50 residential projects completed or underway (as at January 2025). We carry out Passivhaus design for our own projects and for those designed by other architects. Envirotecture’s commitment to sustainable architectural design stretches back three decades; it’s integral to how we approach any project. We are full service architects but you can pick ‘n’ mix too.

Sustainable design: desktop plan review

Do you already have plans drawn up? We send you a detailed questionnaire to gather relevant information and understand what you want to achieve. One of Envirotecture’s sustainability experts analyses this alongside plans and site information, takes into account the budget and other constraints and considers realistic opportunities to increase sustainability, energy efficiency and healthfulness values. We consider how to ensure excellent indoor air quality and appropriate design of building systems. We offer this service to homeowners and architects/building designers/draughts people.

We deliver a comprehensive written report chock full of high-level, tailored recommendations. Usually this can be delivered within three weeks. Plus there’s an hour-long follow-up meeting (in-person or online) to work through any questions or discuss next steps. Our recommendations can be implemented by you or others involved in the project or we can provide estimates for Envirotecture to be involved.

Sustainable design: site review

Maybe you already have land where you want to build—or perhaps you’re considering purchasing it but need advice on its suitability. Alternatively, you might want to radically improve the house or office you already have. We get out on site with you for a boots-on-the-ground assessment of the opportunities and challenges of this specific place.

The process starts with you completing our detailed questionnaire so we can gather all the relevant information and understand what you want to achieve. You detail your specific questions.

We visit the site, analyse existing conditions and assess what can be done, keeping in mind your specific aims and questions. We prepare written advice via email with notes and sketches (not a formal report). For a retrofit/renovation of an existing building, we’ll consider improvements in sustainability, energy efficiency and occupant health.

$1900 includes total travel time of two hours.

For locations further away from our offices, please enquire—if feasible, additional travel time will be charged separately.

Pre-design feasibility study

This stage is crucial to establishing realistic expectations about outcomes and costs. Trust us: you really want to work through these details before rushing headlong into design (whether a new build or extensive renovation/retrofit).

Envirotecture has deep experience with designing homes for urban and rural sites and works with a number of trusted, expert builders. We understand the costs to build and what can go wrong if you’re unprepared.

We’ll provide straightforward advice to help you clarify your priorities and confidently go forward with dreams that fit your budget and timing. (You’ll save heartbreak and a tonne of money by getting to grips with this before you start design.)

  • We send you a detailed questionnaire to gather relevant information and understand what you want to achieve.
  • We draw out your specific aspirations about sustainability, covering aspects such as healthy living spaces, long-life/low-maintenance materials, local/Australian-made materials, regenerative or biophilic design, reduced carbon emissions, on-site energy generation etc.
  • We undertake a desktop review of the site, assessing its constraints and opportunities.
  • We prepare a detailed spreadsheet exploring budget feasibility.
  • We detail a tailored timeline for key stages (design, documentation, permits, construction).
  • We provide a list of consultants required at different project stages and provide an indication of their fees.
  • We deliver a project summary that includes all of this detail.
  • We host an hour-long follow-up meeting (in-person or online) to work through any questions or discuss next steps.

At the end of this process, a homeowner is equipped to make informed, realistic choices. They may choose to engage Envirotecture for full service architectural work, take just the next step (concept design) or go with another firm. We don’t lock you in.

Sketch design

This service is only available to clients who have undertaken a pre-design feasibility study with Envirotecture. Sketch design is a great option for small, simple projects with tight budgets that will be managed by the homeowner. One of our talented designers will provide a digital sketch design. The homeowner then briefs a draughtsperson to prepare all documentation required for the building permit. This combination infuses the project with high-quality design flair while still tightly containing costs.
