Project Details

Designed to reduce water and energy demands, the buildings use natural ventilation, daylighting and photovoltaic arrays (where site conditions allow) integrated into the conical roof. This roof design allows rainwater to be collected and used for toilet flushing, hand basins and cleaning.

The brief called for a safe and secure, yet durable and easily maintainable environment for its users. Hence the building focuses on good circulation and visibility. Low maintenance, durable materials such as galvanized steel, pre-cast concrete, composite timbers and plastics give the building a contemporary look and feel.

The concrete is made from 95% recycled materials, produced at Fairfield Council’s Sustainable Materials Resource Centre in Wetherill Park, western Sydney, and in conjunction with MetroMix. Only the Portland cement is virgin material – even the water is harvested or recycled. Fairfield Council is currently investigating replacing the Portland cement with geopolymers, which will reduce the embodied energy and CO2 output to about 5% of conventional concrete.

The eye catching design, bright colours and clean interior finishes make these public toilets a welcome addition to the Fairfield community.

JUNE 2011 – This project won a Sydney Design Award from Building Designers Australia (Sydney Branch).

OCTOBER 2011 – This project won a Commendation in the Building Designers Australia (NSW Chapter) Design Awards for Public Buildings & Special Projects.
